PAPERFURY

Hello lovelies! Today I'm linking up with Cait + Sky for Beautiful People, which is a monthly writer link-up that focuses on the characters in your writing projects. I've participated in a few link-ups before, but never Beautiful People, so I thought I'd finally set about changing that.
Today I'll be answering questions about one of my protagonists, Edmund, from my WIP Bastard Boys that I never shut up about

(images from Pinterest)

The Questions:

 : What’s their favourite book/movie/play/etc.?
Edmund isn't really a person who picks favorites. If he likes it, he likes it, and he tends to not rank things that are important to him, because there's usually so few things that he holds close + he's never felt the need to categorize them. But he adores anything fantasy, and stories about "knights in shining armor," tend to be the ones he reads most.

Is there anything they regret doing?
Occasionally Edmund goes through bouts of self-doubt, and he regrets leaving his sister + her son on their own, in order to work for Elliott and his business. Family means the world to Edmund, and although he's working in order to support them, he regrets not being able to spend more time with them.

If they were sick or wounded, who would take care of them and how?
Aidan-- and he'd whine about it and make wise-crack jokes the whole time. But he'd be the most caring and attending person ever, doing his best to keep Ed's mind off his ailment. He'd likely coerce one of the other boys into reading Edmund's favorite psalms/stories for him.

Is there an object they can’t bear to part with and why?
His father's tattered old bible rarely ever leaves Edmund's side. It's a reminder of the man his father used to be, and a memory of when things used to be simpler.

What are 4 ways to win their heart (or friendship)?
-kindness: there are few things ed values more than a kind person
-a mutual love for stories
-make him coffee, with two + a half (the half is very important) spoonfuls of sugar, and a scone on the side
-sweets. tbh, just give any of the bastard boys something sugary, and you'll have their heart

: Describe a typical outfit for them from top to bottom.
A thick, woolen black coat, with tarnished brass buttons, over a plain white button up shirt, and dark trousers, in either navy blue, or black. The shoes are always the same scuffed, hand-me-down loafers from his father. Edmund doesn't tend to care about clothes; his wardrobe is simple and essentially identical from day to day.

What’s their favorite type of weather?
The rare days on the island when the sun comes out, are the best days, as far as Edmund's concerned. The ever observant Elliott noticed Edmund's shift in mood on those days ages ago, and he's made it a type of tradition to release Ed from his duties for the day so that he can enjoy the weather and visit his family.

What’s the worst fight they’ve ever been in?
The fight Ed classifies as the worst is the one he had right before his father kicked him out of the household. They'd been fighting about his dad's increasing dependency on alcohol, things got physical... and, well, it was bad. Certainly, Edmund's been in more violent bouts of fighting, but the one with his dad was the worst to him, because it dealt with someone he loved. And because it's a fight he lost.

What names or nicknames have they been called throughout their life?
It's always been just Ed, used as a nickname by family and friends; although Edmund has been called a fair share of other things (spoiler: none of them are nice) since becoming part of Elliott's gang.

What makes their heart feel alive?
Stories. His sister. The bastard boys and all their antics. The hope that one day he can leave everything behind, live in a place where the sun always shines, and watch his sister's kid grow up in a place far away from pain and fear.

I hope you enjoyed this little look at another one of my fictional boys. ^-^
I'm finally getting back into writing more, and I'm excited to be able to take part in more fun link-up's/post more about WIP. :)

  2. Ooh, I love the title. And the juxtaposition of him being in a gang but liking stories about knights in shining armour. Does he ever achieve his hope or would that be telling?

  3. I LOVE EVERY ASPECT OF EDMUND ALREADY; HE SOUNDS LIKE SUCH A SWEET SMOL BEAN. Actually, all of your boys do - I love any opportunity to hear more about them. Could a small assortment of snippets possibly be forthcoming at a later date? *begging eyes*

I am currently working on 10,000 things, but my current focus is my sorcery fantasy series. I've been working on revamping it the past few days, and I think I'm going to consolidate two of the characters, redo the worldbuilding (it now takes place in a Viking-esque instead of Victorian-esque fantasy country), change up who the main characters are.....basically, reimagine most of it. It's turning into much more of an antihero story than I'd originally anticipated, with a bookish demon, a violent political insurgent, an evil prince, a former assassin, and a lawless spy emerging as the main characters. (As opposed to a bunch of do-gooder nobles and sorcerers, which is how I'd originally planned it.)

I love writing about Safi, my smol angel from my heaven vs. hell novella. HE'S JUST SO PRECIOUS, I CRY. Yet I feel no remorse about torturing him. The true writer's paradox.

ALSO. I WAS AT MY STATE'S ACADEMIC DECATHLON COMPETITION OVER THE WEEKEND, RIGHT? And the team that's won for the past 17 years (I kid you not, 17 fucking years) literally showed up to the awards ceremony in color-coded outfits. The women all wore blue dresses with black necklaces, and the men all wore black suits with blue ties. I turned to the girl next to me and went "Ravens much?" and she looked at me blankly and thEN I REALIZED. NOT EVERYONE'S READ TFC AND SEES IT EVERYWHERE.

What have you done to me, Adaline.

    1. AHHH THANK YOU ELLIE DEAREST. most of them *are* sweethearts. elliott's the only debatable one lol.
there miiiiiight be some snippets someday??? ;)

I SAW VIKINGS AND MY BRAIN JUST KINDA OVERLOADED AND SCREAMED. there is such a lack of viking inspired lit in the world and i need more dammit. your wip's always sound so incredible (i'm just over here making constant grabby hands at my screen because i NEED) and i'm so intrigued by the prospect of this one. antihero stories are my utter favorite, and i just, i need a bookish demon in my life. please. there is nothing this girl loves more than supernatural and books.

"yet i feel no remorse about torturing him." OKAY BUT ME.

IS IT BAD THAT LIKE, I READ THE START OF THE STORY AND INSTANTLY KNEW WHERE IT WAS GOING WITH THE RAVENS REFERENCE. AHHH I'M SORRY I CORRUPTED YOU BUT AT LEAST NOW I'M NOT ALL ALONE IN THIS HELL THAT IS THE FOXHOLE COURT.

thank you, as always, for another lovely comment. <333
