|| Series Finales I Still Haven't Finished ||

I don't think it's any secret that I'm a horrible person when it comes to starting something and sticking with it. (You can dig back in my archives for all the post series I started and never added to, if you don't believe me.) So it should come as no surprise that series finales are kind of my worst enemy. I want to finish the stories, I do! I'm just scared of big books and things actually... ending? I'd rather just pretend that everything is wonderful and continue to start more series instead. (And not finish those either, because haha, no.) But I thought today, I'd share some of my shame, and talk about some of the series I have yet to finish.

CROOKED KINGDOM - Leigh Bardugo
This one is arguably the most embarrassing. *hides in corner*
I absolutely love the Grishaverse, and the six of crows gang is one of my favorite casts of characters ever. I got the book as soon as it was released and dived into it, but around when I reached 200 pages, school picked up, I became distracted, and it just...?? Kind of sat there tbh. As time has gone on I've become more and more intimidated by it, and I seriously just don't want to go through the pain of finding out which of the dregs dies.
I think I know who? And that might be contributing to me pushing off finishing it as well.

(Also, let's not talk about the fact that I've only read the first Grisha trilogy book, either.)

THE ROSE AND THE DAGGER - Renée Ahdieh
I don't even know what my excuse for this one is, I just know that I haven't read it and I feel horrible because the series is literally just a duology?? And yet?? I somehow still haven't finished it?? I thought TWATD was beautiful and I liked a good chunk of the characters and plot so I don't understand why I still have this looming on my tbr shelf, staring at me disdainfully.
Somebody please send help.

GOLDEN SON + MORNING STAR - Pierce Brown
I feel a lot about these books like I do Crooked Kingdom. I'M SO INTIMIDATED DAMMIT. They've been on my shelves for ages and I keep pushing them off even though I enjoyed the first one immensely (SEVRO THO!!) and have heard nothing but great things about the rest of the series. The last one just looks huge on my shelf and every time I look at it, I start calculating how long it's going to take me to get through it, and I chicken out, bc that's just the wimp reader I am. I'm already five behind on my goodreads challenge, so for now I'm just sticking to the books I know I can fly through while whimpering at the big ones. I'LL GET TO THEM SOMEDAY, I SWEAR.

DREAMS OF GODS AND MONSTERS - Laini Taylor
The Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy is something I have a love-hate relationship with. I thought the first book was pretty good, but I could've cared less for the second, and tbh I don't even know how I slugged through all 500 pages of it. This one is more of a priority thing, and I don't think I'll get to it anytime soon because I've got other books I'd much rather read. I want to know how it ends? But I can't say that I care a lot about the outcome.

And there we go! Those are a few of the book series that I have yet to finish. I've got a lot of other books I want to get to before these, but my goal is to at least cross off one of these poor finales from my list before the year is over.

I hope you're all doing well, and having a lovely day! Don't forget to smile for me, because you're fantastic. ^-^

NOW, LET'S CHAT! What book series have you yet to finish? Are any of these on your list, or have you read them already(tell me what you thought of them!) Do you prefer series or stand-alones?

  1. I also haven't read Dreams of Gods and Monsters. I mean, I loved the first book (I just finished re-read it yesterday) but I remember didn't like the second one. I hope my opinion change with this reread or at least I could finish this series once and for all!

  3. Omg I relate so hard. I actually hate finishing series because I often find finales are really disappointing??? Like sometimes they just CAN'T be as epic as the first book I fell in love with.😂 And I actually loved Daughter of Smoke and Bone but got less enchanted by each book and by the finale I was all bleh. So that probably doesn't help you at all.😂 I will 5000% confirm that Crooked Kingdom and Morning Star are PERFECT and also WILL HURT YOU but they're good. You must try them sometime!! When you get the courage!! (Also why are finales so darn long?!? It's like we have to put aside 9 years to slog through all those pages...)

    1. ugh, YES. I think the only truly fantastic one I've read within the last year was A Conjuring of Light.
i'm so happy to hear that you at least liked crooked kingdom and morning star, though!! i'm hoping i can get to them soon. <3

  4. About half of my bookshelf is filled with books I've started to read and then abandoned because of school or something else getting in the way. And there are so many series that I've started but I haven't gotten around to actually buying the rest of the books in the series to read. Now I just find myself re-reading what I've got purely because I'm too lazy to find something new, haha.
I hope you accomplish your goal of finishing these series by the end of the year and I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the outcomes of them!

    1. i feel you on that-- i used to be the same way, until i started getting stubborn about finishing everything i picked up. but it's definitely hard to keep going in a series, that's for sure. xD
      thank you, jo!

  5. I RELATE SO MUCH TO THIS POST, DEAR LORD. My TBR is so large I'm constantly getting distracted in the middle of series; I've found I have to read series books in quick succession in order to have any hope of finishing.

I was wondering why your goodreads says you haven't finished CK, but I completely get what you mean. I was really hesitant to read the last Discworld (my all-time favorite series) book because it had been a part of my life for so many years, and I wasn't ready for it to end. Plus, the only reason it ended was that the author died, and it felt like reading The Shepherd's Crown would be to acknowledge he was gone. When I finally read the book, it absolutely broke my heart (the most iconic character died in a manner and time parallel to the author). I didn't want to finish it because I was afraid I'd get to the end and the character would still be dead. But I think finishing it was the best way to honor the dead, both character and author. When you finish CK, I'll be here to talk if you wish. (I feel like that ended up very long and rambling, sorry.)

Depending on how long it's been since you read The Wrath and the Dawn, I'd recommend rereading it or reading a summary before you start The Rose and the Dagger. I only waited two months between books, and it turned out I'd forgotten some important stuff. Maybe you have better memory than I do, though XD

I'm with you on not having finished the Grisha trilogy. I think I read Shadow and Bone in.....September? October? Yike. Other series I haven't finished include:

    - The Secret Series
    - The Penderwicks
    - Wheel of Time
    - Lockwood and Co.
    - Artemis Fowl

This is such a great post idea! I might have to steal it, with due credit, of course.

ALSO A THING HAPPENED LITERALLY WHILE I WAS WRITING THIS: My parents were talking about sports, and I, of course, was paying no attention. But then I heard the words "Penn State" and swerved in my seat so quickly I nearly got whiplash. Penn state?? USC?? Exy?? Neil?? Wait.....exy isn't real. Shit.

THEY HAVE INFILTRATED MY LIFE SO MUCH, NEIL AND NICKY AND ALLISON AND ALL OF THEM. YOU HAVE NO IDEA. I WILL HAVE YOY KNOW I BLAME YOU ENTIRELY FOR THIS XD

    1. oh gosh, i can definitely understand why it'd be hard for you to finish discworld-- not to mention the paralleled death. that would just rip my heart out, oh my god.

i actually have a terrible memory when it comes to books (who was the main character in the last book i read? who knows, not me.) i think there's a summary site that does really in-depth chapter by chapter discussions on ya books, so i'll probably just look at that if i find i'm drowning in the sequel. xD

ooh, is the secret series + artemis fowl good? i remember seeing them in the library so many times when i was still in public school, but i never ended up reading them. *hides in shame*

MY FOXHOLE COURT BABIES AHHH. every time you mention them i just wanna scream with happiness. i don't regret dragging you into this fandom in the slightest. xD

    2. YES THEY ARE SO VERY GOOD. Seriously, the authors have incredible talent. They are written for much younger audiences (8-12, I'd say), but they're so very well-written I don't find them immature or silly at all.
