3 Things About Myself

1.) I volunteer at a local cat shelter and it's kind of my favorite thing ever. I get to spend two hours playing with cats and trying to get the shy ones accustomed to human touch. It's honestly just reaffirmed my plans to be one of those crazy cat ladies. I've also done some event photography, which was an absolute blast. There's nothing like seeing 8 day old kittens to warm your heart. ^-^

2.) I'm kind of obsessive when it comes to fandoms/discovering new things. I can easily categorize my life into "phases," based purely on what I was heavily obsessed with at the time. It's probably not the greatest thing to be so sporadic with interests, but its allowed me to find a lot of things that I love.

3.) I've taken American Sign Language courses for the past three years, and while I wouldn't say I'm fluent, I love the subject to bits, and definitely think I could be passable in conversation. It might take a bit more fingerspelling than typically required, but I know enough of the grammar/basics to convey information and understand the general topic of conversation. I absolutely love learning about the language and its history, and I wish it was something that was more widely acknowledged.
(It doesn't count for language credits which pisses me off tbh)

The Questions

What is the worst book you've ever read? This book
 totally ruined everything ever.
i'm sure there's a picture of me somewhere slam-dunking paper princess into the trash. it was the most sexist and vile thing i've ever read and i'm still absolutely baffled at how it made it onto shelves. between the consistent shaming of women, the threats of sexual abuse, and the "should've-been-shocking-but-was-just-disgusting" ending, it's a mystery how i didn't physically mutilate the book. (i donated it instead. the bookstore seemed to have the same appalled feelings for it as i did. let's cross our fingers and hope it's rotting away somewhere far away from humanity.)

Have you ever met an author in the wild?
i've only met a local author who i didn't really know at the time, but v.e. schwab is coming to my state in a few months and i'll be damned if i don't see my fave in person. i'll probably be a blubbering mess, but lord knows it'll be worth it.

Do you eat and read at the same time?
*kicks books with tiny chocolate stains underneath bed*

Worst book injury? (Can be to you or yourself)
the only one that's coming to mind is when i was just a wee thing in 2nd (3rd?) grade and i had a paperback shoved in my desk, unaware that the cover was literally bent completely in half, until it came time to clean out my desk and i saw the atrocity i had committed. besides that, i try really hard to keep my books in nice conditions. i'm the one in bookstores rifling through five copies of the same book to find the one that's in the most pristine condition and muttering about bent tops on hardcovers.

What are you currently reading?
currently reading the animal under the fur by e.j. mellow (na spy romance w/ the BEST female friendship) and nemesis by brendan reichs (not really loving it but i'm powering through bc i'm tired of dnf-ing books).

again, a big thank you to kris for tagging me!! this was so much fun, and i enjoyed it so much. <3

i'm not really sure who to tag because i can never keep track of who does these and who doesn't, but i'll go ahead and nominate ellie @ the other side of reality, sunset @ sunset sky, and tasya @ the literary huntress.

my questions are:
who is your all-time favorite book character? (and yes, i know it's torture, but you have to try to narrow it down to at least a few ;) )
what writing style aggravates you the most? (ex: books heavy on the description, flowery prose, etc.)
favorite book cover?
thoughts on the trend of pages being made super thin in order to make long books look smaller?
what book do you hate that you can't understand why everyone else loves?

LET'S CHAT! Tell me something about yourself down in the comments! I want to get to know all you lovely readers better. And while you're at it, what's your worst book injury? (I won't judge, I promise!)

  1. Thank you for tagging me! I'm also possesive when it comes to fandom... They're my people, my family and my thing xD I don't read much NA, they contain too many brooding and alpha male for my taste, but Paper Princess seems like the most of all! I honestly don't know how that book can get published.

  3. Omg I hear you for Paper Princess. I still shudder when I Think of that book and the horrible disgusting themes it had and how it is shelved as young adult. It's NA at best. I mean AT WORST. Omg. If I could brain wipe - that'd be the book I'd want to do it for. πŸ˜πŸ˜’
Also yaayy that you know ASL! That's amazing! If I ever learned another language, it'd be sign.

    Also THAT KITTEN THO. 😍😍😍

    1. books that are shelved as ya when they're clearly na give me anxiety. i just want to scream because so many younger readers pick them up without knowing they have mature themes.
thank you!! i love it so much. it's so complex and interesting. <3

      ISN'T IT PRECIOUS???

  4. DUDE I'M SO GLAD I MAKE YOU SNORT. THAT BRINGS ME GREAT JOY. I aim for people to snort at me comically. Also, I need to find the nearest cat or any animal place that I can volunteer at because OMG THAT PRECIOUS SMOL BABY. Can I just say, hell yeah for learning sign language. I am so disgusted that it's not considered a language. It's harder to learn than any other language I would argue because it's a totally different method of communicating!!! I tried to learn braille when I was a smol crouton (my brother is blind) and was infuriated constantly. Needless to say, I didn't learn braille.

Also, you already know my book tragedy. Please don't make me relive the sadness that is my banana-filled rotting lump of sadness.

    1. YOU MAKE ME SNORT ALL THE TIME I CAN'T WITH YOUR POSTS.
isn't it just so pure?? i couldn't get over how adorable it was.
it aggravates me, too! i've wanted to write a letter for a while about how it needs to be changed so that it gets language credit, but i have no idea who to send it to. :/
people assume it's easy but it's really not. gloss (translation of asl into written word) is so freaking complex and in-depth, with just as many, if not more, rules than english.
that's amazing that you attempted braille! i've always been fascinated by it.

we shall never speak of the banana incident again. i solemnly swear.

      xx a
